Metacritic TV Reviews, Fargo - Season 1, The series based on the Coen brothers’ Oscar-winning film begins with the arrival of Lorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton) to. So anyway, Kindzi killed Andina, knocked Alak out cold and brushed Stahma aside to get at tender little veal- like Luke. Now that Kindzi has the screaming ball of chubby in her hands, Stahma offers herself as a slave (sex slave, friendship slave, food slave, all the kinds of slave) in return for the baby. Alak rouses long enough to hear his mother’s sacrifice and be truly moved. He also hears Kindzi’s rejection of the offer. Fortunately, Datak has been hiding in the bushes with his fist- blade drawn, waiting for the most dramatic moment to enter. That moment is now. He stabs Kindzi through the neck, pinning her like a to- do list against the doorframe. She’s not dead, of course — just stuck — so the family Tarr decide it would be best to run like hell before she gets free. Hesitantly, wary that this could still be a trap, Alak begins to forgive his parents as they all drive toward town to stop the influx of Omec. Yewll, who knows a thing or two about Omec warships, devises a plan that requires four volunteers, including herself. Requirements: You must love Defiance, have a karmic debt to settle, be a little bit crazy, and/or have a little bit of a death wish. The obvious choices, in that order, are Amanda, Datak, Yewll and Nolan. And yes, Nolan has a little bitty death wish –- remember, it’s only a matter of time before the Votanis Collective gathers their resources from down south to scoop up the man who assassinated their beloved leader, so he’s mostly dead already. Even if no Omecs kill them while they board the ship, set an explosion, and run away, they still have to pray that the transport pods are operational in the “Down” direction. But as they prep for the mission, Kindzi whips her earthbound crew into beast mode, and one of her soldiers slashes Amanda in the stomach. Yewll can’t let her sweet little crush bleed to death, and Nolan won’t leave her side, but when she revives and orders him to finish the mission that holds the town’s only hope, he complies. She knows he’ll be back and seals that certainty with a kiss. Irisa says she’ll take Amanda’s place, and when Nolan objects, she hits him with that “Live or Die Together” mantra they’re both so fond of, thereby steamrolling any objection he may have. Once aboard the ship, Nolan gets googly- eyed at the sight of Earth from space, and Irisa has to be like, “Yo, moon boy, time to save the world.” She and Datak assist Yewll in hooking up her brain to the ship’s ark brain (bow chicka bow bow! Can we show that on basic cable?) while Nolan heads to the engine room to manually override the heating system, redirecting all of the heat into one strategic spot to get it to go BOOM. But look out, the ship’s drones try to kill him! Yewll overrides them and saves him. But look out, Kindzi realized someone had been using her transport pods and got really mad and tries to kill him! Yewll can’t override this one; Nolan has to initiate a different kind of manual override –- with his fists! Luckily, he brought them along. They almost give up, but at the last minute, the fists throw Kindzi into the conveniently open hatch above the seething mass of gulanite that powers the ship, which vaporizes her like the cherry vanilla tobacco juice in those e- cigarettes the kids are so fond of these days. Poof goes the lady villain. By this time, Datak and Irisa have plugged so many pointy cords into Yewll’s body and seen her lose so much vital fluid, they know she’s not making it back to Earth with them, a fact she knew all along but didn’t tell anyone so they couldn’t try to stop her. She’s part of the ship now, and knowing they can’t do anything about this, Datak and Irisa thank her for her sacrifice, say their final goodbyes and head for the transport pad. Datak beams down, but Irisa waits for her pops. She tells him she’s not leaving — the people on board this ship are just that, people, no more monstrous than she or Nolan have been, and she chooses to save them. Nolan grumbles. Why does she have to be so damn ethical? He asks Yewll to redirect the energy from Explosion Mode to Propulsion Mode so they’ll blast into unchartered space to find a home for the li’l Omecs. Yewll hates this idea, but her prospects are severely limited, so she might as well. Irisa runs to her dad to give him a big bear hug for doing the right thing. He returns the embrace with a blast from Kindzi’s Space Taser (our new band name) and places his daughter on the transport pad. He’s just a used- up war hero on the lam from the VC, but she has a future that he won’t let her waste. If she could move, she would surely fight back, but she can only listen as he tells her how much he loves her and how incredibly proud he is of her before he sends her back to Earth. Nothing like a father- daughter goodbye to kick up the dust in the room and make our eyes water! Nolan makes for the captain’s chair of this incredible vessel, missing his family but filled with purpose and excitement at exploring the cosmos. Yewll will be his co- pilot as they sail through the inky blackness of cold space — remembered, loved, and thanked by the people of Defiance. Do you like the Defiance TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for another season? But in truth, the 1. Extension of a Man” was written by Edward Howard about the mental pain he saw Hathaway experiencing. The song meant so much to Hathaway that he cried upon hearing the final mix. More than 4. 0 years later, Sasha too finds catharsis in it in the Season 7 finale of “The Walking Dead.”Sasha listens to it en route with the Saviors to spill the blood of one more Alexandrian. Having caught wind of the Alexandrians making moves, he wants to kill three people as punishment, but Sasha is able to talk him down to just one casualty. She has him wrapped around her fingers, although he insists it’s not a “man- woman” thing. The Alexandrians are prepared for the visit after Dwight’s “apparent” betrayal. He warns of Negan’s arrival and offers to set up some roadblocks to slow the Saviors down. This gives Rick and co. The Hilltop is on standby, and unbeknownst to Rick, Ezekiel and his regiment are en route to join the cause. All this preparation is for naught, however, after a capital- s Shocking twist in the form of another betrayal. Eugene leads the Saviors’ cavalry to Alexandria’s gates and makes a plea for Rick to fall back in line. Conflicted, he asks where Negan is. Eugene is Negan, he says. This seals his fate, or seems to, at least, as Rick gives the nod for Rosita to set off the dynamite. But it fails, and Jadis puts a gun to Rick’s head and the rest of the Scavengers follow suit. It was her crew who tipped off the Saviors, so we can spare at least some of our ire toward Gregory, who is still a scumbag but less of a scumbag than we thought. The surprise gives Negan a chance for another one of his monologues. He taunts Rick once again and outlines his demands: all the guns, all the lemonade, a sacrifice for Lucille, Daryl, and the pool table with all its accessories. Furthering his flair for the dramatic, he has Simon and Dwight unveil a coffin. Negan reveals that Sasha is inside and says he’ll kill her and everyone else (“probably”) if Rick doesn’t comply. Sasha’s nonlinear journey is somewhat frustrating in the episode. Most of those are still unnecessary, save for the more immediate events. As she gets into the coffin at the Sanctuary, she asks only for a glass of water. And while listening to one last song, she pops her suicide pill. Cut back to Alexandria, where Negan opens the coffin and is attacked by Walker Sasha. Her sacrifice opens the window for the Alexandrians not held at gunpoint to begin opening fire. Still, Rick is immobilized, and so too is Michonne, by the Scavenger sniper who was supposed to be her partner in crime. Rick tries to make an even better deal with Jadis, but she’s having none of it. She pops a shot in his hip and kicks him off the platform. Then she brings him to Negan, who has Carl on his knees and surrounded by a gang of Saviors. Once again, it’s monologue time for Negan. He outlines his fondness for Carl — “If I had a kid, I’d want him to be just like him” — but says he’s going to kill him in front of Rick, then cut off his arms. As this is happening, Michonne is in a fight for her life with the Scavenger. She’s nearly choked out when she gets a hit in, but still not safe. Rick then hears a woman’s screams from off- camera. Undeterred, and unwilling to return to his neutered self, he repeats his taunt from the Season 7 premiere, saying he will still kill him one day. In yet another twist, this one much more expected, Ezekiel and his regiment arrive just in time to spare Carl’s life and allow the war to continue. Shiva pounces on one of Negan’s henchman just as he pulls the bat behind his shoulders, ready to swing. Ezekiel, Morgan, and Carol all come in guns blazing, with the king delivering a properly dramatic decry: “Alexandria will not fall, not on this day.”The Scavengers flee, and eventually the Saviors are run out of Alexandria. Along the way we’re treated to some awesome action shots, particularly the pairings of Ezekiel and Carol and Rick and Morgan fighting alongside each other. The newly aligned army attempts to chase Negan and the rest of the Saviors, but a crew left behind is able to ward them off with gunfire and allow them to escape back to the Sanctuary. War is just getting started.“The First Day of the Rest of Your Life” — written by Scott M. Gimple, Angela Kang, and Matthew Negrete; and directed by Greg Nicotero — isn’t quite a perfect finale, but it’s damn fun and undeniably satisfying. My only real beef is with the gratuitous Sasha flashbacks and the indulgently sappy ending monologue from Maggie. While the Kingdom’s just- on- time arrival was to be expected, the Scavenger’s betrayal is the best twist the show has pulled off since first revealing that everyone who dies comes back as a walker. And in a show in which death has recently lost most of its power, Sasha’s death was a potent sacrifice, carrying far more weight than Glenn and Abraham’s (Michonne, though badly battered, survives, so no need to mourn two characters tonight). So was Season 7 redeemed? I wouldn’t go that far. The show’s penchant for stalling, over- manipulating, and biting off more than it can chew can’t be erased by one explosive finale. While the back half of this season was better than the first, it still suffered from those same issues. But going into yet another summer between seasons, we won’t be left with a bad taste in our mouths this time around. Like Sasha with her earbuds, we too get a sweet release.
